Tube Goose Calls (aka Diaphragm Calls)

This is a fun project for me.  Lot’s of calling history right here!

The Tube Call or Diaphragm Call is a unique and super-realistic style of call.

It uses a sheet of rubber, instead of a reed, stretched across the small end of what looks a little like a little bugle, or mini-megaphone.  The call is operated by putting your lower lip against the edge of the rubber piece and blowing air between your lip and the rubber piece.  It is a bit like “squealing” a balloon.  Once you master it, you will be amazed by the goose sounds that you can make with a tube call.

In 1979 Harold Knight won the World Goose Calling Championship using  his K&H Tube Call.  He was the first person to do so.

David Coleman got a tube call from Harold in 1979 and learned to use it, won the World Goose Calling Championship in 1982 and continued to improve his tube calling skills to a level that nobody has ever matched to date.

I met Harold Knight, David Hale and David Coleman in 1981 and was floored by all of their sounds.  Floored, not just by the many sounds they made with the calls, but with the individuality of each of their sounds and routines.

To this day, Harold Knight, David Hale and David Coleman are 3 of my Lifetime Calling Heroes.  Not just for their calling, but for their kindness and friendship through the years.  Three great examples of how Sportsmen should be!

In the many years since 1982, David made many “tweaks” to the original tube call design, and put them into his own version that is quite different from Harold Knight’s design.  Harold’s call can do turkey calls, which was its original intent, and it could do goose notes too, but most people, with a few exceptions, seem to find it easier to operate them in the higher range of goose tones.

David’s call has a much larger Mouthpiece, Chamber and Megaphone than the original, which makes it naturally more suited to Goose tones (lower pitched notes, think Bass drum).   It is Deeper and Fatter sounding, easier to get your lip “into it”, which is a goose thing, vs. “up to it” which is more a turkey thing.

The calls are available from us in Maple, Rosewood, or Black Delrin, and occasionally in other special woods that I find along the way.

Each call is supplied to you with a Variety of Diaphragms in different “weights” and an extra Rubber Band, so that you can experiment and find the one that is right for you. We have replacement diaphragms of several thicknesses available here on the site.

The new diaphragms, which we cut right here, last at least 10 times as long as the latex used in the 70s and 80s.  I, personally get over a year of calling out of 1 Medium-Heavy Diaphragm.  No need to refrigerate them or anything else.  They are a different material and they hold up!

I also cut diaphragms sized for the K&H tube calls in the same thicknesses.  I suggest going 1 thickness lighter for the plastic K&H.  Trust me, I have one on my desk.  You can order them at this link, just put a note in the order that says “for Knight and Hale” and I will send you the right size.  Thanks!
